Our
Physical Therapists provide screening, evaluations and therapy for children
at any developmental level or age with any degree of impairment. An impairment
is any hindrance to a child's ability to play, and explore the environment,
grow to be as functionally independent as possible, or participate and learn
in an educational setting.
Physical Therapists generally address the gross motor development of children,
such as the development of the skills of sitting, weight bearing and weight
shifting, crawling, transitioning, walking, running, balancing and coordination.
Physical Therapists also rehabilitate children following an injury or surgery
to address issues such as strength, range of motion, and coordination. We
also asses the need for assistive devices such as orthotics, crutches or
wheelchairs and train for use of assistive devices. Therapists utilize aquatic,
neurodevelopmental, orthopedic and or sensory integration therapies based
on each child's needs.
In addition to rehabilitation provided following injury, we treat the spectrums
of Neurologic Disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Cord Injury, Traumatic
Head Injuries, Myelodysplasia, and Coordination Disorders; Developmental
and Gross Motor Delays which maybe due to premature birth, hypertonia or
hypotonia, seizure disorder, hydrocephalus or Genetic Syndrome such as Down
syndrome, Rett syndrome or Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome; Musculoskeletal Disorders
such as, Muscular Dystrophy, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Arthrogryposis Multiplex
Congenita, Torticollis, or Toe Walking.
Physical Therapists can screen or evaluate a child without a physician's
referral. A physicians referral is required by law for therapy treatments
and is usually required for insurance benefits. We routinely provide parents
with screenings and evaluations to determine if there is a need for therapeutic
intervention then, if needed, contact the physician for the referral.
