| Occupational therapy
for children involves the assessment, evaluation and treatment of any
motor, coordination, or processing impairments. An impairment is anything
that hinders a child's ability to play and explore the environment, learn
in an educational setting, or grow to be as functionally independent as
possible.
Occupational therapy generally addresses the fine motor development of
a child, such as with issues involving the arms and hands. The involvement
can be as mild as handwriting problems to as significant as fine motor
delays or extremity disuse. Our Occupational Therapists specialize in
treatment of sensory integration issues such as tactile and/or oral defensiveness,
hyperactivity, hypersensitivity to pain or noise, poor body awareness
and/or coordination, stimulation or withdraw behaviors. Therapists utilize
the therapeutic approaches of neurodevelopmental, fine motor coordination,
sensory integration, visual motor integration and visual perceptual therapies
based on the needs of the child.
In addition to treatment of children with a diagnosis such as Cerebral
Palsy, Developmental Delay, Fine Motor Coordination Disorder, or Genetic
Syndrome, we provide treatment of Developmental Disorders including Attention
Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism, Pervasive
Developmental Disorder, Sensory Integration Dysfunction.
Occupational Therapists can screen or evaluate a child without a referral
from a physician. A physician's referral is required by law for occupational
therapy treatments. We routinely provide parents with screenings and evaluations
to determine if there is a need for therapeutic intervention then, if
needed, contact the physician for the referral. |
